Makurdi is the capital of Benue State, located in eastern Nigeria, and part of the Middle Belt region of central Nigeria. The city is situated on the south bank of the Benue River. Makurdi serves as a port from which goods, including locally grown sesame seeds and cotton, are shipped to Lokoja (126 miles [203 km] west at the Niger-Benue confluence) and to the Niger River delta ports.
